The Lost World Of Friese-Greene (DVD) £19.99
In the mid-1920s, Claude Friese-Greene drove from Land's End to John O' Groats making a series of films en route. These remarkable films captured the life and people on his journey in colour, at a time when a world was filmed in black and white. This pioneering use of colour was to be the culmination of the work he had carried out with his father, the cinematographer William Friese-Greene. This unique archive of Friese-Greene's footage, preserved and restored by the bfi, reveals many things in the UK that have changed in 80 years, as well as, surprisingly, what has remained. The film is being brought to television as a result of a BBC/British Film Institute co-production. It will be broadcast on BBC 2 in three episodes commencing on Tuesday 18th April 2006. In The Lost World of Friese-Greene, presenter Dan Cruickshank traces the original route in a vintage car, tracking relatives of the people who appear in the films. He shows footage to people who appeared in the films as children and are seeing themselves on film for the first time 80 years later. Episode 1 starts in the West Country as Cruickshank uncovers radical changes in rural traditions from cider-making to stag hunting and takes a look back at holiday fun at the seaside. Episode 2 picks up his journey in Cirencester, travels onwards to Wales through the Midlands and North to Lancashire and the Lakes. In the final episode, he journeys through Scotland, meeting local historians and descendants of people in the films, with breathtaking scenery all the way. DVD Extras: Extended interviews with some of the people Dan Cruickshank encounters on his journey. Interview with cinematographer Jack Cardiff (DOP for Michael Powell's The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus and A Matter of Life and Death)

The Somme: From Defeat To Victory (DVD) £14.39
For the very first time this major BBC production - commissioned to mark the 90th Anniversary of the Somme reveals how British tactics changed over the months of the campaign and turned defeat into victory.Featuring superb and highly authentic dramatic enactments which vividly recreate the experiences of soldiers on both sides and contemporary combat footage, it compares the assault on Thiepval by a company of the 2nd Salford Pals on July 1st 1916 with an attack on the same objective by men of the 12th Middlesex in September that year. The terrible lessons illustrated by the wholesale decimation of the Salford Pals had led to new battlefield innovations such as more air observation, the creeping barrage, tank support and, most crucially, more power to commanders in the field in just a few short months.Spectacular, authentic and deeply moving, this gripping account of the true battle of the Somme offers an entirely fresh perspective on events, while its dramatisation of real soldiers experiences provides a soldiers eye view of the fighting as never before.

The 30-year programme to excavate, raise and conserve the wreck is the most complex and extensive maritime archaeological project ever undertaken. Twenty years into the programme, project experts exclusively reveal the results of their work.
